Sept. 3, 2004

AMHERST, Mass. -- Lindsey Weening scored twice and Eleni Benson and Jamie Ortega each tallied once as Yale opened the season with an impressive 4-1 victory over UMass at Rudd Field. Weening, a junior, entered the game with one career goal, while Benson was playing in her first game at Yale since taking a year off to play for the Greek National Team that competed in the Olympics in Athens. The win was the first ever for the Bulldogs over the Minutewomen.

"This is a great first win for us," said Yale head coach Rudy Meredith. "Hopefully we can build on it. It's very nice to beat UMass for the first time in school history."

UMass (0-2) had outscored Yale 33-1 in the previous 10 meetings between the teams.

Lindsey Bellini gave the Minutewomen the early lead when she scored at 10:05, but the Bulldogs answered with the next four goals. Weening started the onslaught with an unassisted goal at 15:05. Benson then scored with just 36 seconds left in the first half when she headed in a Laurel Karnes corner kick. Ortega gave Yale a 3-1 lead with a goal at 58:43, and Weening capped the scoring at 66:05.

Sarah Walker made four saves to post the win in goal for the Bulldogs, who outshot UMass 18-15.

Yale plays its home opener on Sunday against Manhattan at 1 p.m. at the Soccer-Lacrosse Stadium.
