Yale Blanks Hartford In Season Opener

Sept. 5, 2003

WEST HARTFORD, CT - Laurel Karnes and Vanessa Resnick each had a goal and an assist as Yale opened the season with an impressive 2-0 victory over Hartford at Al-Marzook Field.

Resnick scored the game winner with just over 10 minutes to play in regulation off a feed from Karnes. The duo then hooked up again with two minutes remaining, this time with Karnes placing a left-footed shot into the right corner on a give-and-go with Resnick.

"It was a tough battle," said Yale coach Rudy Meredith. "We had to work some kinks out because it was the first game."

Yale outshot Hartford by a 12-7 margin. The Hawks' best chance to score came midway through the second half when freshman Diane Zaniewski stole the ball in her own third and fired a shot that missed to the far post.

Yale goalkeeper Sarah Walker made one save in the shutout win. Hartford keeper Heather Hinton made three saves and allowed two goals.

The Bulldogs are back in action on Sunday when they play Connecticut at 1 p.m. on the campus of Central Connecticut
