QUEENS, N.Y. - Eleni Benson's goal 1 minute, 14 seconds into overtime lifted Yale to a 1-0 victory over St. John's in a non-league game. Benson settled Maggie Westfal's pass and fired a blast past Red Storm goalkeeper Rebecca Capinera.
"It was a tough game," said Yale head coach Rudy Meredith. "We survived and were able to get a much-needed victory."
It was the third straight 1-0 game for Yale, which fell to 12th-ranked Duke last Friday and to second-ranked North Carolina on Sunday.
Chloe Beizer made one save to post her first career shutout in goal for the Bulldogs.
Yale outshot the Red Storm 16-5, including 8-1 in the second half.
The victory ended St. John's two-game winning streak. The Red Storm is 2-2 overall.
After playing their first three games away from home, the Bulldogs return to the friendly confines of the Soccer-Lacrosse Stadium for their home opener on Friday night against Hartford at 7 p.m.
