NEWARK, Del. - Emma Whitfield scored from 15 yards out late in the first half to lift Yale to a 1-0 victory over Montana at the Blue Hen Adidas Classic. Freshman Leslie Perez dribbled down the right sideline and crossed the ball to Whitfield, who scored her first goal of the season. Perez's assist was the first point of her career.
The win was the first of the season for the Bulldogs, who tied Delaware 1-1 on Friday after losing their first two games to national powers Duke and North Carolina last weekend.
"It was a nice weekend for us," said Yale head coach Rudy Meredith. "We improved a little bit in our attack and only gave up one goal. Hopefully, we can build on this."
Goalkeeper Susan Starr made five saves to post her first career shutout. Grace Harris stopped three shots for Montana (3-3).
Both teams had 10 shots on goal.
The Bulldogs return home and host UMass on Friday at 7 p.m. at Reese Stadium.
