Bulldogs Defeat Quinnipiac 5-1
Sept. 13, 2005
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Emma Whitfield and Crysti Howser both scored twice as Yale cruised to a 5-1 non-league victory over Quinnipiac at the Soccer-Lacrosse Stadium. Howser also added a pair of assists for the Bulldogs, who won their fourth straight game to improve to 4-2 overall.
Whitfield scored twice in the first 8:35 of the game to give Yale an early 2-0 lead. Her first tally came at the 1:02 mark when she took a feed from Howser and beat Quinnipiac goalkeeper Sarah Lusto.
"That was probably our best goal of the season and it got us momentum early," said Yale head coach Rudy Meredith.
When Whitfield scored again at 8:35, this time off a pretty feed from Jamie Ortega, it appeared the game might turn into a rout, but Quinnipiac's Danielle Kim scored late in the first half to make it 2-1 at the intermission.
The Bulldogs, though, dominated the second half, outshooting the Bobcats 11-2 and scoring three goals in a 12-minute stretch midway through the period to take control. Howser started the second-half scoring when she headed in a Christina Huang corner kick at 67:28. Laurel Karnes notched her first goal of the season at 74:59, and Howser closed out the scoring less than five minutes later when she knocked in a Jessica Berggren cross.
"Everybody stepped it up in the second half," Meredith said. "Hopefully the fact that we were able to score five goals will help us relax."
Sarah Lusto stopped eight shots, including seven in the second half, for Quinnipiac (2-3).
The Bulldogs head back to the road this weekend. They play at George Mason on Friday at 7 p.m. and then are at ACC power Maryland on Sunday at 2 p.m. Yale doesn't play at home again until an Oct. 1 matchup with Harvard at 4 p.m.
