NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Laurel Karnes scored the winning goal with 34 seconds left in the second half as Yale edged Sacred Heart 3-2 at the Yale Soccer-Lacrosse Stadium. Christina Huang stole the ball from a Sacred Heart player at midfield and fed Karnes, who eluded goakeeper Leslie Konsig and slid the ball into an empty net.
"Christina stepped up and played a great ball to Laurel," said Yale head coach Rudy Meredith.
Karnes' goal came less than five minutes after Sacred Heart (1-2-2) had tied the score at 2-2 on a Christel Kalweit goal at 84:53.
Vanessa Resnick opened the scoring for the Bulldogs at 17:51 when she knocked in the rebound of a Jessica Berggren shot. After the Pioneers tied it late in the first half, freshman Michelle Gosselin gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead with a goal at 66:01. Gosselin took a nifty feed from Karnes and beat Konsig from 10 yards out.
"This was a scrappy win for us," Meredith said. "It wasn't pretty, but we got it done."
