The Yale women's soccer team dropped the first of two contests out in California, falling 2-0 to Santa Clara. The loss was the first of Yale's record-setting season, dropping the Elis to 5-1-0 overall.
Lindsay Weening had a good chance in the first half to convert to break the 0-0 deadlock, but the Santa Clara goalkeeper got in front of her shot and the two teams went into the half in a scoreless tie.
But in the first minutes of the second half, Santa Clara took advantage of a penalty kick to get on the scoreboard. Later in the half, the team added to their lead and won by a 2-0 score.
"We fought hard against a very good team, and we had some chances," said Yale assistant coach Fritz Rodriguez. "The team worked really hard and it was just unfortunate to get those results."
The Elis take on Stanford on Sunday in their second West Coast contest.
