Yale Drops 1-0 Decision At Stanford
Sept. 19, 2004
PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Martha West scored the only goal of the game in the 76th minute as Stanford edged Yale 1-0 at Maloney Field on the second day of the Stanford Invitational. West settled a pass from Marcie Ward and fired a shot into the opposite corner. Sarah Walker made five saves in goal for the Bulldogs, who were outshot 7-3.
"It was a defensive struggle," said Yale head coach Rudy Meredith. "Our girls battled really hard, but we just weren't fortunate enough to get a goal. Sarah played really well. There was nothing she could do on the goal."
Nicole Barnhart made one save to post the shutout in goal for the Cardinal (5-2).
"This was a very good win against a very well organized Yale team," said Stanford head coach Paul Ratcliffe. "We showed great patience and perseverance and we ended up with a great goal when Martha put a great finish on Marcie's pass. We're really pleased with this result because Yale is a great team."
The Bulldogs, who dropped a 2-0 decision to Santa Clara on Friday, have lost two straight after opening the season with five straight wins for the first time in school history.
Yale hosts defending Ivy League champion Princeton on Friday night at 7 p.m. at the Soccer-Lacrosse Stadium.
