New Britain, Conn. - The Yale women's soccer team fell to nationally-ranked West Virginia, 2-0, at Willow Brook Park in New Britain on Sunday afternoon. The loss drops the Bulldogs' record to 4-2 on the season.
Lisa Stoia and Marisa Kanela scored less than 15 minutes apart in the second half for West Virginia (7-1) to make the difference in the match. Yale was outshot 16-4, but goalkeeper Sarah Walker recorded five saves, keeping the match scoreless until West Virgina broke the scoreless tie at the 64:48 mark.
"West Virginia is very good, but we battled," said Yale head coach Rudy Meridth. "I'm proud of the way we played."
Michelle Gosselin provided one of Yale's best scoring chances in the second half, as she came down the right side, striking a shot on goal.
West Virginia goalkeeper Lana Bannerman made two saves for the shutout.
The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday, September 27, at Princeton.
