NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Laurel Karnes headed in a Jessica Berggren cross in the 78th minute to snap a 2-2 tie and lift Yale to a 3-2 victory over Colgate in a non-league game at the Soccer-Lacrosse Stadium. It was the third game-winning goal of the season for Karnes, who leads the Bulldogs in points with 15. Jamie Ortega and Lee Ann Jasper also scored for the Bulldogs (6-5-1).
"We've been trying to figure out how to score more goals, and tonight we were able to get three," said Yale head coach Rudy Meredith. "Jessica Berggren came off the bench and really gave us a lift. She made a great pass to Laurel."
Colgate's Carolyn Warhaftig opened the scoring just one minute into the game, but Ortega quickly tied it when she knocked in the rebound of a Karnes shot at 3:04. The Raiders (8-6) regained the lead on a Kate Barrett goal at 16:01, but the Bulldogs tied it on Jasper's goal with less than a minute to play in the first half.
The two teams combined for 41 shots. Sarah Walker made six saves in goal for Yale, while Luisa Miller had 12 stops for Colgate.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Saturday afternoon when they host Cornell at 4 p.m.
