ITHACA, N.Y. -- Laurel Karnes scored a pair of first-half goals as Yale cruised to a 2-0 victory over Cornell. Sarah Walker and Chloe Beizer combined to make two saves in goal as the Bulldogs posted their third straight shutout. Yale improves to 8-4 overall and 2-2 in Ivy League play. The Big Red is 4-6-2 overall and 1-3 in Ivy play.
Much of the first half was spent with both teams trying to establish any sort of scoring opportunities. Both defenses played well, limiting shots on goal. However, in the 29th minute, Karnes headed in a Mimi Macauley cross near the left post past Cornell goalkeeper Katie Thomas.
Karnes struck again seven minutes later when she took a pass from Trista Choksi and broke in alone on goal. Karnes tucked the ball inside the far post for her third goal of the season.
The Yale defense stifled the Big Red attack in the second half and kept Cornell off the scoreboard. Yale held the advantage in corner kicks (6-2) and shots (9-6) for the game.
Thomas had two saves before she was replaced by Katrina Matlin, who made one stop for the Big Red.
The Bulldogs remain in upstate New York to play Colgate on Sunday at 1 p.m.
"It's very nice to get an Ivy League win," said Yale head coach Rudy Meredith. "We just need to keep it going and get another win on Sunday."
