NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Laurel Karnes scored the game-winning goal 3 minutes, 44 seconds into the second overtime as Yale edged Cornell 2-1 in an Ivy League game at the Soccer-Lacrosse Stadium. Karnes flicked in a Lee Anne Jasper cross from 10 yards out as the Bulldogs won their second straight game. Yale (7-5-1, 1-2-1 Ivy) trailed 1-0 at halftime, but controlled play for much of the second half and overtimes, outshooting the Big Red 12-6.
"We weren't doing enough up front, so at halftime we decided to move a third player up and that changed the whole game," said Yale head coach Rudy Meredith. "We gave a good effort today and didn't panic when we fell behind."
The overtime goal was Karnes' fourth game-winner of the year. She leads the Bulldogs in goals (7) and points (17).
Cornell (7-3-2, 1-2-1 Ivy) opened the scoring at 36:04 when Shannon Fraser headed in a Natalie Dew cross from eight yards out. Lindsey Weening got the equalizer for Yale midway through the second half. Weening took a feed from Jasper, and after a Cornell defender slipped, she broke in and alone and slipped a shot past Cornell goalkeeper Katrina Matlin.
Sarah Walker made three saves in goal to earn the win for the Bulldogs. Matlin finished with four saves for Cornell.
Yale returns to action next Saturday when it plays at Penn at noon.
