Offensive Outburst Leads Yale Past Quinnipiac
Nov. 1, 2006
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Emma Whitfield, Maggie Westfal, Crysti Howser and Emily Haddad all scored as Yale cruised to a 4-1 victory over Quinnipiac in the 2006 home finale at Reese Stadium. The four goals were a season high for the Bulldogs, who snapped a four-game winless streak.
"This was one of our best team efforts of the season," said Yale head coach Rudy Meredith. "Our passes connected and we created a lot of chances."
Yale (7-7-2) opened the scoring in the 30th minute when Whitfield took a feed from Natasha Mann and blasted a shot that Quinnipiac goalkeeper Sarah Lusto's got a piece of but couldn't control.
"We scored first so we didn't have to chase the game," Meredith said. "That gave us some confidence."
The Bulldogs had a number of scoring chances before finally extending the lead midway through the second half. Westfal gave Yale some breathing room when she blasted a shot inside the far post at 63:55. Caitlin Collins assisted the tally.
Quinnipiac, though, got right back in the game nearly two minutes later. Susan Donovan converted off a feed from Amber Sidoti at 66:32
The Bulldogs then went on the offensive and scored two straight goals to put the game away. Howser took a shot that went off of Lusto's leg and into the net with 19:46 remaining to make it 3-1. Haddad then found the back of the net with just over three minutes left to cap the scoring. Kristen Anderson assisted on both goals.
Susan Starr started in net for Yale and made three saves to earn the victory. Her best save of the night came in the 15th minute when she dove to her left to stop an Amber Sidoti shot. Mimi Macauley played the final 2:44 in goal and made one save.
Yale outshot Quinnipiac 19-8, including 15-4 in the second half. Lusto and Heather Zaccone combined to stop seven shots for the Bobcats (9-7-2).
The Bulldogs play their final game of the 2006 season at Brown on Saturday at 4 p.m. A Yale win would mark its sixth straight winning season.
