NEW HAVEN, Conn. - It was a frustrating night for the Yale women's soccer team on Saturday against Columbia. The Bulldogs had a big edge in possession and outshot the Lions 21-14, but it was Columbia that went home with a 2-1 victory. Chrissy Butler's goal at 62:37 snapped a 1-1 tie and goalkeeper Rebecca Taylor made some terrific saves in the final minutes to lift the Lions to victory.

"I thought we played really well," said Yale head coach Rudy Meredith. "We deserved a better result."

After a scoreless first half, Sophia Merrifield got the Bulldogs on the board when she headed in Natalia Mann's corner kick at 54:44.

The Lions, though, tied it just 13 seconds later. On the ensuing kickoff, Sophie Reiser took possession and sent a through ball to Ashlin Yahr, who fired a shot from 10 yards out into the back of the net.

"That was really the one mistake we made, letting them score off the kickoff," Meredith said.

Butler's goal less than 10 minutes later came after a mad scramble in front off a corner kick.

Yale (8-6-2, 2-3-1 Ivy) had a couple of great chances to tie it in the final minutes. Megan Ashforth fired a shot from just outside the box that deflected off a Columbia defender. Taylor, though, bent backwards to snare it at 75:32.

Nearly 10 minutes later, Maggie Westfal managed to get her left foot on a ball in the box, despite having a defender draped on her. The ball got behind Taylor, but she raced back and fell on it just before it got to the goal line.

"Their goalie played like Wonder Woman," Meredith said. "I don't know how she made those two saves."

Ayana Sumiyasu made four saves in goal for the Bulldogs.

Seniors Westfal, Mann, Emma Whitfield and Hayley Zevenbergen were playing the final home game of their careers. The four were honored in a ceremony prior to kickoff.

The Bulldogs close out the season next Saturday at Brown at 7 p.m.
