Yale women's soccer player Eleni Benson will play on the Greek team in the preliminary round of Olympic soccer competition Wednesday. The Greeks take on Team USA at Pankritio Stadium in Heraklio, and the game will be televised on MSNBC live at 11:00 AM Eastern. Benson took last season off from Yale to prepare for the Olympics. In 2002, she was a major contributor for the Bulldogs, finishing fourth on the team in scoring with 14 points. Her top performance came against Holy Cross when she scored twice. As a freshman, Benson started 12 games. The Greek team is in the G group with the U.S., Australia and Brazil. Greece plays again on Friday against Australia, then finishes the preliminary round agianst Brazil on Tuesday August 17. Both games are scheduled for 11:00 AM Eastern. The top three teams in the G group advance to the quarterfinals Friday August 20. "It is very inspiring being on the Greek team, playing with the Olympic Games being in Greece," Benson told the New Haven Register in July. "I see myself as very lucky, blessed ... I feel I need to make the most of it." Benson was recently featured on FIFA.com.
