NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Yale, which advanced to the third round of the NCAA College Cup for the first time in school history last year, has been ranked 13th in the 2006 SoccerBuzz.com preseason poll. The Bulldogs, who finished 14th in SoccerBuzz's final 2005 poll, return 12 letterwinners and eight starters from last year's team that won a school-record 15 games and captured the Ivy League title.
Yale plays three other teams ranked in the poll, starting with the season opener against No. 12 Duke on Sept. 1 at Reese Stadium. The teams split two games last year. The Blue Devils won 1-0 early in the season, but Yale avenged that loss with a 2-1 victory in the second round of the NCAA College Cup.
Two days after the Duke game, the Bulldogs host No. 6 North Carolina. Yale plays at No. 22 Dartmouth on Oct. 8.
UCLA starts the season ranked No. 1, followed by Santa Clara, Notre Dame, Florida State and Portland.
SoccerBuzz also released its regional rankings, and Yale is second in the Northeast, behind Boston College.
