NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The National Soccer Coaches Association of America released its preseason poll on Tuesday and Yale was ranked 23rd. The Bulldogs, who open the season on Sept. 1 against No. 12 Duke, return 12 letterwinners and eight starters from last year's team that won a school-record 15 games, captured the Ivy League title and advanced to the third round of the NCAA College Cup.
Yale, which went 15-4-1 overall last year, finished 13th in the final 2005 NSCAA poll, the highest season-ending ranking in school history. The Bulldogs are the only Ivy League school ranked in the NSCAA preseason poll.
Portland, the defending NCAA College Cup champion, is ranked first, followed by UCLA, Penn State, North Carolina, Yale's opponent on Sept. 3, and Notre Dame.
