Tough Tests Await Bulldogs On Opening Weekend

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Yale is off to Tobacco Road to open the 2005 season. The Bulldogs, who finished 13-5-1 overall last year and earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament, will take part in the Nike Carolina Classic on Friday and Sunday at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, N.C. Yale, which received votes in the NSCAA preseason poll, plays 12th-ranked Duke on Friday at 7 p.m. and then battles second-ranked North Carolina on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Both the Blue Devils and Tar Heels have already played. Duke is 1-0-1 after beating UNC-Greensboro 1-0 on Aug. 26 and tying William & Mary 1-1 on Aug. 28. Duke returns 10 of 11 starters from last year's team which reached the final 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Friday is the first meeting between Yale and Duke.

The Tar Heels are 2-0 and have outscored their opponents 10-1. UNC beat Colorado 3-0 and topped Tennessee 7-1. North Carolina has won 18 national championships and finished 2004 ranked fifth in the nation. Yale and North Carolina are also playing for the first time.
