Two Tough Tests Await Down South

Two Tough Tests Await Down South

Sept. 6, 2007

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - For the third straight year, the Bulldogs will get to test themselves against two of the nation's top programs. Yale travels to Chapel Hill, N.C., this weekend for the Nike Carolina Classic and will play Duke on Friday at 5 p.m. and defending NCAA College Cup champion North Carolina on Sunday at 1 p.m. Sunday's game with North Carolina can be viewed for a fee at

Unlike the last two years, however, the Bulldogs will have played a game before meeting the powers. Yale opened the 2007 campaign with an impressive 3-1 victory over Bucknell last Friday at Reese Stadium and received votes in the Sept. 4 NSCAA national poll. The Bulldogs controlled play against the Bison in the opener, outshooting them 19-13 and having a number of quality scoring chances.

Maggie Westfall, freshman Becky Brown and Leslie Perez all scored for Yale, and Hannah Smith added two assists. Susan Starr and Ayana Sumiyasu split the goalkeeping duties and combined to make four saves.

The Bulldogs opened the 2005 season against Duke and lost a hard-fought 1-0 decision. The two teams met again in the second round of the NCAA College Cup later in the year and Yale won 2-1. Last year at Reese Stadium, Duke cruised to a 3-0 victory in the Bulldogs' season opener.

The Blue Devils have played two games in 2007 and both have ended in scoreless ties against Pepperdine and San Diego. Duke has been outshot 24-15, but Allison Lipsher has made 13 saves in goal.

North Carolina has beaten Yale in each of the last two years - 1-0 in Chapel Hill in 2005 and 4-0 last year at Reese Stadium.

The Tar Heels are ranked sixth in the nation by the NSCAA but lost their season opener 1-0 to South Carolina last weekend. It was UNC's first ever loss in a home-opener. North Carolina outshot the Gamecocks 12-3 but was unable to score.

This weekend is the first of two long trips for the Bulldogs. They will travel to Portland, Ore., for the Nike Portland Invitational. Yale plays Washington next Friday before taking on the host Pilots on Sept. 16.
