NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Freshman Hayley Zevenbergen, who was selected as Yale's Defensive MVP at the Nike Carolina Classic last weekend, has been named the first Ivy League Rookie of the Week. Zevenbergen started the first two games of her career as the Bulldogs faced national powerhouses Duke and North Carolina and held each team to only one goal. UNC had scored 16 goals in its first three games of the season before playing Yale.
Zevenbergen was a two-time all-league, all-area and team MVP at Edmonds Woodway High School, which won a league title and participated in the 4A state championship for the first time in school history. She played club soccer with fellow Yale freshman Emma Whitfield for North West Nationals Volante, which won the state championship in March.
Whitfield was selected as the Bulldogs' Offensive MVP at the Carolina Tournament.
Yale, which defeated St. John's 1-0 in overtime on Tuesday night, hosts Hartford in its home opener on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Soccer-Lacrosse Stadium.
