NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Emma Whitfield, who scored twice in Saturday's 5-0 victory over Cornell, has been named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week. Whitfield is the fourth Yale freshman to be honored this fall, joining Hayley Zevenbergen, Maggie Westfal and Crysti Howser, who has won it twice. In all, a Yale player has been selected as the league's rookie of the week in five of the seven weeks.
Whitfield scored just 4 minutes, 10 seconds into Saturday's game when she took a long through-ball from Christina Huang and slipped a low shot past Cornell goalkeeper Taylor Hendren. Whitfield's second goal of the game came midway through the first half on a hard shot into the top left corner.
Whitfield is currently second on the Bulldogs with five goals. Three of her five tallies have been game-winners.
Yale, which has won 10 straight games, hosts Sacred Heart on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at the Soccer-Lacrosse Stadium. The Bulldogs are in first place in the Ivy League with a 3-0 record. Dartmouth and Columbia are both 2-1. Yale plays at Columbia on Oct. 28 and hosts Dartmouth on Nov. 2 at 6 p.m. The Bulldogs and Big Green were supposed to play on Oct. 8 but the game was postponed because of heavy rain.
