NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Three Yale players have earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District I honors. Maggie Westfal was named to the first team and moves on to the national ballot. Natalia Mann was selected to the second team, while Becky Brown earned third team recognition.
Westfal, a senior forward from New Canaan, Conn., is fourth in the Ivy League in goals (8) and points (24). She recorded her first career hat trick in Yale's victory over Sacred Heart en route to earning Ivy League Player of the Week honors. Two of her goals have been game-winners. She is a political science major at Yale and was an Academic All-District I second team selection last fall.
The 2008 national Academic All-America team is scheduled to be announced on Nov. 18.
Mann, a senior defender from Chevy Chase, Md., has started all 15 games this fall and helps anchor a Yale defense that has posted seven shutouts. She scored the game-winning goal in overtime on a penalty kick against Central Connecticut, and tallied an assist against Sacred Heart. She is a history major at Yale.
Brown, a sophomore forward from Lawrenceville, N.J., leads the team with 10 assists, which is only one shy of the single-season school record. She scored two goals, including the game-winner, and added an assist in Yale's 3-1 victory over Western Carolina. Brown has not yet declared a major at Yale.
The Bulldogs (8-5-2) play their final home game of the season on Saturday when they host Columbia. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
