Huang, Whitfield Named First Team All-Ivy

Nov. 8, 2006

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Christina Huang, who has enjoyed an outstanding career for the Bulldogs, has added another accomplishment to her already impressive resume. Huang was named first team All-Ivy on Wednesday to become the first Yale player ever to earn first team All-Ivy honors in each of her four seasons. Joining Huang on the first team this year is Emma Whitfield, who led the team in scoring with 15 points. Sophia Merrifield and Maggie Westfal were each named to the second team. Mimi Macauley earned honorable mention recognition.

Huang, the team captain, started 15 games this year and was Yale's anchor in the midfield and on defense. In August, she was named to the Watch List for the Hermann Trophy, which is presented to national player of the year. As a junior, she was a second team NSCAA All-American and earned first team all-region honors in each of the last two years.

Whitfield, a sophomore who earned second team All-Ivy honors as a rookie, led the Bulldogs in goals (5) and assists. Two of her goals were game-winners, against Montana and Fairfield.

Merrifield, a freshman, made an immediate impact in her first year. She was the only freshman and one of only four players overall to start all 17 games. Her first career goal came against Cornell and she also had assists against UMass and Central Connecticut.

Westfal, a sophomore, established herself as one of Yale's top playmakers this season. She finished fourth on the team in scoring with six points (2 goals, 2 assists) and scored the game-winning goal in a victory over Quinnipiac.

Macauley, who was third on team in scoring with seven points (3 goals, 1 assist), finished her career with 15 goals, the most of any player on the roster. She scored both goals in Yale's 2-1 win over Princeton and was named the Ivy League Player of the Week two days later.

The Bulldogs finished with an 8-7-2 overall record, their sixth straight winning season.
