Westfal Named First Team All-Ivy; Five Other Players Honored

Nov. 13, 2008

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Maggie Westfal, who led the Bulldogs in goals (8) and points (24), has earned first team All-Ivy recognition for the second straight year. Five other Yale players were honored as well. Megan Ashforth, Sophia Merrifield and Becky Brown were named to the second team, while Caitlin Collins and Miyuki Hino received honorable mention recognition.

Westfal, a senior from New Canaan, Conn., started all 17 games. She scored her first career hat trick against Sacred Heart en route to earning Ivy League Player of the Week honors. Westfal finished her outstanding career with 16 career assists, which is tied for the sixth most in school history.

Ashforth, a junior from New Canaan, Conn., made an immediate impact this year after transferring from the University of Virginia. Her first point at Yale was an assist against Stanford, and she started all 17 games.

Merrifield, a junior from Honolulu, Hawaii, helped anchor a Yale defense that posted seven shutouts. In addition, she added a goal against Columbia. This is the third straight year she has earned All-Ivy recognition.

Brown, a sophomore from Lawrenceville, N.J., led the Bulldogs with 10 assists, only one shy of the school record set by Blanca Fromm in 1997. Against Western Carolina, Brown scored two goals, including the game-winner, and added an assist. She was an honorable mention All-Ivy selection as a freshman.

Collins, a junior from Raytown, Missouri, started a career-high 16 games and played a key role on Yale's defense.

Hino, a freshman from Potomac, Md., made an immediate contribution. Three of her four goals came in Ivy play, including both goals in a 2-0 victory over Dartmouth.

The Bulldogs finished the season with an 8-7-2 overall record, their seventh straight winning season.
