Four Yale Players Earn All-New England Honors

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Four Yale women's soccer players - Sophia Merrifield, Megan Ashforth, Miyuki Hino and Maggie Westfal - have earned first team All-New England honors.

Merrifield, a junior who was recently elected the 2009 Yale captain, was a second team All-Ivy selection. She started all 17 games and helped anchor a defense that posted seven shutout.

Ashforth made an immediate impact this year after transferring from the University of Virginia. Her first point at Yale was an assist against Stanford, and she started all 17 games. In addition, she earned second team All-Ivy honors.

Hino earned honorable mention All-Ivy recognition in her rookie year. Three of her four goals came in Ivy play, including both goals in a 2-0 victory over Dartmouth.

Westfal, a senior, led the Bulldogs in goals (8) and points (24). She started all 17 games and recorded her first career hat trick against Sacred Heart. In addition, she was named first team All-Ivy for the second straight year.

The Bulldogs finished the season with an 8-7-2 overall record, their seventh straight winning season.
