NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Army softball team that comes to Dewitt Family Field on Saturday has played 16 games. There is one in particular that should have Yale’s attention. On Mar. 20, the Black Knights knocked off defending Ivy League champion Cornell 2-1 at the Rebel Games in Florida. As a result, Saturday’s doubleheader is a good test for a Bulldog team that is only a week away from starting league play. The first pitch of the first game is slated for 1 p.m.
Yale (3-9) has won three of its last four games. During the stretch, the Bulldogs have batted .262, while holding their opponents to a .189 average. Lauren Huddleston belted a three-run home run in the second game against Marist on Wednesday as Yale earned a split with a 3-0 victory. Huddleston is batting .429 in her last four games. Christy Nelson, who homered in the first game against the Red Foxes, also has been hot, posting a .417 average in her last four games.
Kayla Kuretich and Jackie Manzer both pitched well against Marist. Kuretich took a no-hitter into the seventh inning of the second game before surrendering a one-out single. Kuretich leads the Yale staff in ERA (2.10), innings (33.1) and strikeouts (36). Manzer, meanwhile, has eight strikeouts in her last 8.1 innings pitched.
Army’s hitters should challenge the Yale pitchers. The Black Knights (9-7) have five regulars batting better than .340, including Alexis AuBuchon, who has a .444 average. Tiffany Held was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week on Monday. She leads the team with 12 RBI.
The Bulldogs have beaten Army nine straight times. Last year, Yale won all three meetings, including a doubleheader sweep at West Point.
