NEW HAVEN, Conn. – As recently as three weeks ago, it didn't look like there was any chance the Yale softball team would open its home season as scheduled. The snow on Dewitt Family Field was being measured in feet, not inches. Fortunately the weather has cooperated in a big way and it looks like everything is a go for Saturday's doubleheader with Bryant. The first pitch of the first game is slated for noon.
The Bulldogs have won six of their first 10 games this season but are coming off a doubleheader loss at Central Connecticut on Thursday. Meg Johnson had three hits in the two games to extend her hitting streak to four. Johnson is batting .417 over the stretch. Jennifer Ong, who leads the team with a .455 average, had her hitting streak snapped at eight in the second game but belted her first career home run in the first game.
Bryant (3-10) also features a pretty potent offense. The Bulldogs' first victory was a wild 16-15 decision over Utah Valley in February. Bryant scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh to win. The two teams combined for 29 hits in the game. Freshman Lauren Guy leads Bryant with a .343 batting average.
Yale is the third Ivy League opponent for Bryant, which lost to both Penn and Columbia at the Rebel Games in Florida.
Saturday will be the first meeting between Yale and Bryant.
