Six Bulldogs Earn All-Ivy Recognition

Dunham, Johnson Named To Second Team; Westman, Rebman, Yanagisawa, Balta Honorable Mention Selections

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Six Yale softball players have earned All-Ivy recognition. Pitcher Chelsey Dunham and shortstop Meg Johnson were named to the second team, while catcher McKynlee Westman, first baseman Mariclaire Rebman, second baseman Katie Yanagisawa and outfielder Tori Balta were honorable mention selections. It was only the second time since 2006 that Yale had six players honored.

Dunham, a freshman, enjoyed an outstanding rookie season in the circle. She led the Yale pitching staff in wins (11), ERA (3.25), innings (144.1), strikeouts (88) and complete games (16). Her 11 wins tied for the ninth most in a season in school history. She was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week twice during the season. In addition, she was selected as the team's most valuable player.

Johnson, a junior, was honored for the second straight year. She was an honorable mention selection in 2010. This season, she finished eighth in the league in batting with a .352 average.  She tied for second on the team in hits (44), runs (24) and home runs (3). Her 22 RBI were the third most. In Ivy games, she batted an impressive .367.

Seniors Westman, Rebman and Yanagisawa all ended their careers by earning all-league recognition for the first time. Westman started 39 games behind the plate and hit .307 with five doubles and 16 RBI. Twelve of her RBI came in league games.

Rebman improved her batting average by more than 140 points from her junior season and belted the first two home runs of her career. She finished the season with career highs in average (.308), runs scored (20), hits (41), doubles (6) and home runs (2).

Yanagisawa was one of only four players to start all 42 games. She finished second on the team in hitting (.321) and tied for second in hits (44) and runs scored (24). Her 23-game hitting streak during the season was one of the longest in the nation this season.

Balta made an immediate impact for the Bulldogs in centerfield. She started all 20 Ivy games and batted .321 with three doubles and eight RBI. Overall, she started 41 games and hit .299.

Yale ended the season with a 17-25 overall record and an 8-12 Ivy mark. The Bulldogs set a school record with 64 doubles and also finished with an all-time best .290 team batting average.
