Brennan’s Double Lifts Bulldogs To Walkoff Win Over Marist In Opener; Red Foxes Win Second Game 5-2
Johnson Has Three Hits In Doubleheader For Yale
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale softball team didn't have a ton of offense in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader with Marist, but the Bulldogs sure made the most of their opportunities. Freshman Hannah Brennan's double that fell just inside the right-field foul line scored Meg Johnson with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as Yale won the opener 3-2.
The second game also went extra innings, and Marist's Nicole DiVirgilio hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to help the Red Foxes (8-15) to a 5-2 win.
Johnson started the winning rally in the opener with a one-out single and then stole second. Brennan followed with her first career walk-off hit.
Chelsey Dunham was the winning pitcher. She tossed a complete game, yielding seven hits, while striking out six.
Dunham, who worked out of trouble throughout the game, was the beneficiary of some outstanding defense. The biggest play came in the seventh when rightfielder Virginia Waldrop threw out Janine Lalli at the plate. Lalli was trying to score from third on Ashley Corriss's fly ball.
The Bulldogs (5-7) grabbed the early lead in the first on Christy Nelson's sacrifice fly.
Marist scored twice in the third, but Yale answered with a run in the fourth. Johnson tripled and scored when the Marist second baseman misplayed Kelsey Warkentine's ground ball.
Both teams had chances to take the lead late. The Red Foxes left two runners on base in both the fifth and eighth innings. Yale had runners on second and third with no outs in the sixth but couldn't capitalize.
The Bulldogs were held to four hits in the second game. Jennifer Ong went 2-for-4 and knocked in two runs. Johnson and Balta also had hits.
Yale trailed 2-0 entering the bottom of the fifth but scored twice to tie. Johnson led off with a single, and Waldrop walked. The two advanced on Chelsea Janes's ground out, and scored when Ong singled to right.
The Bulldogs threatened in the sixth when Johnson reached on an error and stole second, but Lalli, Marist's starting pitcher in the second game, worked out of the jam.
There has been a change in the schedule for this weekend. Due to the forecast of rain on Sunday, the Bulldogs will now play a doubleheader with Providence on Friday at 2 p.m. Yale will still play two games at Bryant on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
