Bulldogs Seek Momentum In Midweek Visit To URI

Last Trip Before Start Of 10-Game Homestand

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale softball team swept a doubleheader from Rhode Island last year at Dewitt Family Field. It capped a memorable 6-0 weekend for the Bulldogs. When the teams meet Wednesday in Kingston, R.I., Yale hopes it will be the start of a big week. The Bulldogs have important Ivy League doubleheaders coming up with Princeton and Cornell. The first pitch at the URI Softball Complex is set for 3 p.m.

Yale (7-15) opened Ivy play last weekend and ran into two of the league's top young pitchers. Penn's Alexis Borden, who blanked the Bulldogs 1-0, was named the Ivy Pitcher of the Week, and Columbia's Brooke Darling, who was the winning pitcher in a 4-1 Lions victory over Yale, was named the Rookie of the Week.

The Bulldogs had two players named to the league's Honor Roll. Sarah Onorato batted .350 in six games last week and knocked in four runs. Overall she is second on the team with a .300 batting average and has a team-best .408 on base percentage. Christy Nelson also had a big week for the Bulldogs. She hit .333 and had three doubles and two RBI. For the year, Nelson is batting .275 and leads the team with eight doubles.

Rhode Island (10-15) played its first home games of the season on Sunday, and split a doubleheader with Dayton. The Rams have hit 18 home runs on the season. Nicole Massoni was named the Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week on Monday. Massoni  batted .714 (5-for-7) for the week with one home run and five runs batted in. For the season, Massoni is batting .444, which tops the conference. She has four home runs, three doubles and 17 RBI in 21 games. Massoni currently has an eight-game hitting streak, and she leads the Rams with nine multi-hit games.Sam Bedore (51 strikeouts in 60.1 innings) anchors the URI pitching staff.
