Ong, Johnson, Balta Have Three Hits On Day For Bulldogs

HANOVER, N.H. - The long ball hasn't been a big part of the Yale offense so far in 2012. That changed in a big way in Saturday's doubleheader with Dartmouth. Tori Balta belted a two-run homer in the fifth inning to lift the Bulldogs to a 3-2 victory over the Big Green in the first game, and Christy Nelson hit a solo home run in the second game as Yale completed the sweep with a 5-4 win.

In the opener, Chelsey Dunham tossed a complete game five-hitter to earn her seventh win of the season.

Yale (10-28, 3-11) took the early lead, scoring once in the second. Meg Johnson singled, stole second and third and scored on an illegal pitch.

After the Big Green scored twice in the bottom of the second, Yale struck for two in the fifth. Jennifer Ong reached on an error, and Balta followed with her home run, the first of her career and only the third on the season for the Bulldogs.

Dartmouth (10-21, 3-11) threatened in the bottom of the sixth, loading the bases with two outs, but Dunham retired Jonele Conceicao on a ground out to third.

The Big Green had the tying run in scoring position in the seventh as well, but Dunham again worked out of trouble.

Yale outhit Dartmouth 6-5. Balta was 2-for-4 and Nelson added a double.

The Bulldogs wasted no time jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the second game. Ong and Balta opened the game with back-to-back singles. After the first out, Johnson delivered an RBI double. Sarah Onorato drove home the second run with a ground out and Johnson scored on an error by the third baseman.

Yale made it 4-0 in the third on Hannah Brennan's RBI single.

Dartmouth scored twice in the bottom of the third, but the Bulldogs answered that with a run in the fifth on Nelson's solo homer.

That turned out to be a very big run when the Big Green scored twice in the sixth to pull within 5-4.

Kristen Leung started the circle and tossed six effective innings to earn the victory. Freshman Kylie Williamson set down Dartmouth in order in the bottom of the seventh to earn her first career save.

Yale outhit the Big Green 8-7 in the game. Johnson and Brennan each led the way with two hits apiece.

The same two teams are scheduled to play another doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 11:30 a.m.
