Yale Looking To Build Momentum With Ivy Play Approaching
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The last time Rhode Island came to Dewitt Family Field, during the 2011 season, it capped a memorable weekend for the Yale softball team. The Bulldogs swept the Rams, winning both games in their last at bat, to cap a perfect 6-0 weekend. When URI visits on Friday, Yale will be looking to start a winning streak. The first pitch of the first game is slated for 3 p.m.
Yale (2-12) has played its first 14 games on the road, so the home opener comes at an opportune time. Freshman Lauren Delgadillo leads the Bulldogs in average (.385) and RBI (7). Sarah Onorato, who began the week 50th in the nation in home runs (4, 0.31 per game) is batting .381. She extended her hitting streak to four in Thursday's game with Providence.
Rhode Island (4-11) hasn't played since falling to Radford 5-2 at the South Florida Invitational on Sunday. Courtney Prendergast leads URI in batting average (.327), runs (8), hits (16), doubles (3), triples (2) and RBI (6). Sam Bedore is the Rams top pitcher. She has a 2.38 ERA with 49 strikeouts in 53 innings.
Yale is the second Ivy League opponent for Rhode Island, which edged Dartmouth 4-3 on Mar. 16. The Rams also will play Harvard and Brown later in the year.
Rhode Island swept a doubleheader from Yale last year in Kingston, winning 5-3 and 7-0.
