Offense Comes Alive; Bulldogs Sweep Army
March 25, 2009
WEST POINT, N.Y. - It looks like the Yale softball team is ready for the start of the Ivy League season. The Bulldogs banged out 24 hits in their final tune-ups before the start of Ivy play in sweeping a doubleheader from Army. Rebecca Wojciak pitched a four-hitter and struck out eight as Yale cruised to an 8-1 victory in the first game. Katie Edwards belted her 17th career home run, tying Shayna Filson's school-record, as the Bulldogs won the second game 7-3.
Edwards's RBI single in the fifth made it 6-0. Army scored its run in the bottom of the fifth, but Huddleston and Enyeart both knocked in runs in the sixth for Yale.
In the second game, Huddleston and Johnson each had three hits. The Bulldogs outhit Army 11-8.
The Black Knights (9-18) scored once in the first, but Edwards's three-run homer to left field in the third gave Yale the lead for good.
Huddleston's two-run single in the fourth increased the lead to 5-1 and the Bulldogs tacked on two more in the fifth.
Yale has now beaten Army nine straight times, including three times this season.
The Bulldogs open Ivy play on Saturday with a doubleheader at defending champion Princeton. The first pitch of the first game is slated for 12:30 p.m. Yale then plays two at Cornell on Sunday beginning at noon.
