FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Beth Pavlicek pitched a three-hitter and hit a two-run triple as Yale edged Fairfield 2-1 to complete a doubleheader sweep and extend its winning streak to eight games. Pavlicek struck out five and did not allow an earned run in notching her fourth victory of the season. The Bulldogs won the first game 1-0. Leah Kelley homered in the first inning, and Peggy Hunt tossed her third shutout of the season. Hunt, who was named Ivy League Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday, scattered six hits and struck out five.
In the opener, Kelley hit the first pitch of the game over the left field fence to account for the only run of the game. Niki Haab singled twice for the Bulldogs, who were limited to three hits by Fairfield starter Tara Hansen. Hansen struck out seven, but also issued seven walks. Yale had several good scoring chances but left 11 runners on base.
Fairfield (10-21) had the tying run on in the bottom of the seventh. Diana Fasano led off with a single. Natalie Visone followed by attempting a sacrifice bunt, but Yale third baseman Meredith Parks quickly fielded the bunt and got the force out at second. Lindsay Walsh then singled, but Hunt retired the final two batters to earn her team-leading fifth victory of the season.
In the second game, Yale scored twice in the third. Kelley led off with a single and stole second. After Christina Guerland walked, Pavlicek tripled. The Bulldogs had another scoring chance in the sixth. Pavlicek doubled and moved to third on Chelsea Kanyer's single, but both were left stranded.
Fairfield scored its run in the bottom of the seventh. Cagney Ringnalda reached on an error and later scored on a balk.
The Bulldogs are back in the friendly confines of Dewitt Family Field on Sunday when they host a doubleheader against Seton Hall at noon.
