FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Peggy Hunt pitched a five-hit shutout as Yale blanked Fairfield 3-0 in the first game of a doubleheader at Alumni Field. Courtney Blachford reached base in all four of her plate appearances and scored two runs for the Bulldogs. She had two hits, walked once and was hit by a pitch. Fairfield won the second game 2-0 as Kate Roberts and Cagney Ringnalda combined on a three-hitter for the Stags.
In the opener, Blachford started Yale's first rally with a one-out single in the third. She moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Aracelis Torres' double to left field.
Yale (21-11) added two more runs in the fifth. Blachford was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Torres then hit a long fly ball that was dropped in right field. Blachford scored and Torres made it all the way to third on the play. Meredith Parks followed with a solid single to centerfield.
The Stags (21-13) had runners on base in five of the seven innings. Their best scoring chance came in the first when Julia Jacoby led off with a double. Hunt, though, retired the next three hitters. Hunt, who has allowed only one earned run in her last 18 innings, struck out two and did not issue a walk.
Fairfield scored once in the second on Jenna DiBernardo's two-out RBI single and once more in the sixth on Riannon Thomas' RBI double.
Yale opens Ivy League play with a doubleheader at Princeton on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs then play two at Penn on Sunday starting at noon.
