HANOVER, N.H. - Peggy Hunt pitched a complete game seven-hitter and Kristy Kwiatkowski and Christina Guerland each had two hits as Yale beat Dartmouth 5-1 in the first game of a doubleheader at Sachem Field. The Big Green won the nightcap 7-5. The games were the Ivy League openers for both teams.
In the first game, Yale (10-16, 1-1 Ivy) jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning. Kwiatkowski led off by reaching on error. She moved to second on Christina Guerland's sacrifice bunt, stole third and scored when Meredith Parks singled to right.
The Bulldogs added four runs in the second. Niki Haab and Libby Peters both walked. Kwiatkowski drove home the first run with a single to right, and Guerland followed with a two-run single to left-center. Chelsea Kanyer capped the rally with an RBI single to left.
Hunt notched her team-high sixth win of the season. She struck out seven.
In the second game, Dartmouth (4-12-1, 1-1 Ivy) scored five times in the first inning and twice in the second.
Parks had three hits and two RBI, and Kanyer and Kwiatkowski both added two hits. Yale outhit Dartmouth 11-10 but left 14 runners on base.
Jessica Meyer pitched 5.1 innings of relief and did not allow an earned run.
The Bulldogs answered the Big Green's five-run first by scoring three times in the second with the help of four Dartmouth errors.
Trailing 7-3, Yale scored once in the fourth on Park's single, which scored Kwiatkowski. The Bulldogs, though, left the bases loaded in both the fifth and sixth innings.
Yale scored its final run of the game in the seventh when Kanyer's ground out scored Kate Meserve, who had singled.
The Bulldogs play a doubleheader at Harvard on Sunday. The first pitch of the first game is slated for 1 p.m.
