FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Deanna DiBernardi and Kayla Kuretich combined on a two-hitter to lead Yale to a 6-0 victory over Sacred Heart in the first game of a non-league doubleheader. The Pioneers came back to win the second game 3-2 in dramatic fashion, scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh to tie the score and once in the bottom of the 10th to win it. Adrian Fitzsimon's RBI double was the winning hit.

In the first game, DiBernardi went the first four innings without allowing a hit and struck out four. Kuretich pitched the final three innings, yielded two hits and struck out two. Aracelis Torres went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Megan Enyeart, Allie Canulli and Courtney Blachford also had hits.

The Bulldogs (13-17) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Ashley Sloan and Katie Yanagisawa were both hit by pitches to start the rally. Torres followed with a hard single up the middle, and when the centerfielder bobbled it, Sloan scored.

The score remained 1-0 until the fifth when Yanagisawa walked, stole second and scored on Torres' double to the left-centerfield gap.

Yale broke it open in the seventh by sending nine batters to the plate and scoring four runs. Blachford singled to start the rally. She then stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored when Sloan reached second on a throwing error by the third baseman. Torres was intentionally walked, and a conventional walk to Katie Edwards loaded the bases. Enyeart's infield single knocked home the second run, and Canulli followed with a two-run single to right-center.

DiBernardi and Kuretich both benefited from excellent defense. Blachford, in left field, made two outstanding running catches in foul territory in the seventh inning.

In the second game, Holly Gutterud went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Rebecca Wojciak pitched the first four innings and allowed only three hits for the Bulldogs.

Yale jumped on the board with two runs in the fifth. Enyeart reached on a two-base error. McKynlee Westman followed with a single to right, and Gutterud's single to right scored Enyeart. Gutterud later scored when Blachford reached first on an error.

The Bulldogs nearly added an insurance run in the seventh. Tracy Timm led off with a single over the third base bag. She was erased on a fielder's choice, but Gutterud followed with a single to center. Blachford then singled up the middle but Sacred Heart centerfielder Taylor Froelich threw out Westman at the plate trying to score.

That became a key play when the Pioneers (15-16) scored twice in the bottom of the seventh on Jen Russell's two-out, two-run double.

Froelich started the winning rally in the 10th with a single. Melissa Mezzanotte then laid down a bunt. Yale tried to get the force at second but the throw was wide and probably wouldn't have been in time to get Froelich. After a passed ball, Fitzsimon knocked in the winning run with a hard-hit ball to right-centerfield gap.

The Bulldogs are back in action this weekend, hosting doubleheaders against Harvard on both Saturday and Sunday. The first pitch on both days is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Free audio of Sunday's games will be available at
