NEW HAVEN, Conn. – No. 2 Yale stayed undefeated Wednesday with a strong 7-2 victory over No. 5 Trinity.
On a day dominated by the Yale men's team breaking Trinity's 252 match win streak, the Yale women also had a statement victory over a previously undefeated Trinity team.
At No. 1, sophomore Millie Tomlinson, the nation's No. 1 player, topped No. 4 Catalina Pelaez by a score of 11-4, 11-8, 3-11, 11-5. The third game was the first that Tomlinson dropped in almost exactly a year, with her last lost game coming on January 19, 2011.
No. 2 Kim Hay won an extremely close match against Wee Nee Low, the No. 21 player to Hay's No. 15. Hay dropped the first game 11-6, won the second 11-13, dropped the third 12-10, then came back to win the final two games 13-11, 12-10 to seal the match victory.
At No. 3, senior captain Rhetta Nadas topped Alicia Rodriguez Acosta 11-2, 11-2, 5-11, 11-7.
At No. 4, senior Alexandra van Arkel fell in five sets to Ashley Tidman, winning the first and fourth games but ultimately dropping the final game.
At Nos. 5-7 Yale was finally able to win some matches cleanly, with junior Katie Ballaine and sophomores Gwen Tilghman and Lilly Fast all winning in straight sets. Freshman Shihui Mao dropped Yale's second match at No. 8, tying the score at 2-2 before dropping an extremely close fifth set 11-13 to Robyn Hodgson, who finished last season ranked No. 55 nationally.
Finally, at No. 9, freshman Issey Norman-Ross beat Pamela Larromana 11-9, 11-9, 11-7 to finish off the 7-2 victory for Yale.
Saturday, the Yale squad will travel to Mount Holyoke for what should be an easier matchup against the No. 13 Lyons.
