PHILADELPHIA — After a strong quarterfinal win, senior Millie Tomlinson came up short in the semifinals of the CSA National Individual Championships in Philadelphia. Meanwhile, freshman Shiyuan Mao defeated a fellow Bulldog, sophomore Annie Ballaine, to advance to the semifinals in the Holleran Division.
In her first match of the day, No. 3 Tomlinson cruised to a 3-0 win over No. 6 Danielle Letourneau of Cornell. This set up a semifinal matchup with No. 2 Kanzy El Defrawy of Trinity.
El Defrawy and Tomlinson have a long and competitive match history. In their only meeting this season, however, El Defrawy bested Tomlinson in four games.
Saturday's match began with two tight games. El Defrawy eked out a 13-11 victory in the first before Tomlinson prevailed by the same score in the second. El Defrawy pulled away with 11-6 wins in the next two games to secure the victory.
In the Holleran Division, Mao and Ballaine won their Saturday morning matchups to set up an all-Bulldogs quarterfinal showdown. The pair, who play in the eighth and ninth spots for Yale, had an appropriately close contest. Mao won in three games, but Ballaine pushed her for every point, leading to a final score of 13-11, 11-9, 12-10.
No. 37 Mao will play in the Holleran Cup semifinals Sunday morning against No. 43 Rachel Scherman of Cornell.
