PHILADELPHIA — On the final day of the CSA National Individual Championships, freshman Shiyuan Mao took two matches to claim the Holleran Cup, the competition's second division trophy.
Mao, ranked No. 37 overall, began the day with a semifinal showdown against No. 43 Rachel Scherman of Cornell. Mao dropped the first game, but rallied to win the next two, putting herself one game away from the finals. Scherman would prove a tough opponent, however, taking a 17-15 win to even the match at two games apiece. Mao held on for a 11-7 win in the decisive fifth game to advance.
In the final, Mao took on Penn's Leslie Gill. Gill edged out Mao in the first game, winning 12-10, but Mao rallied to win the next three games 11-5, 11-6, 11-6, to win the match and the Holleran Cup title.
With the win, Shiyuan followed in the footsteps of her sister and teammate, junior Shihui Mao. The elder Mao also won the Holleran Cup her freshman year.
The victory capped an undefeated freshman campaign for the younger Mao, who went 13-0 in the No. 8 position for Yale during team play. The strong performance this season from Mao, and Yale's other young players, bodes well for the years ahead.
