Jan. 23, 2008

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Bulldogs picked up a solid non-conference win Wednesday night at the Brady Squash Center, defeating the No. 5 Trinity Bantams, 6-3. Captain Miranda Ranieri paced Yale with a solid 3-0 win, coming back from 4-8 down in the third game to sweep Lauren Polonich.

Indeed, the match between Ranieri and Polonich was close throughout. Ranieri fell behind 0-5 in the first game before rallying to tie the score at five points apiece. She would go on to win the first game, 10-8, and the second game, 9-7. She came back to win the third, 10-8, to take the match.

"At 8-5, [Polonich] needed to be aggressive and keep the tempo up, and she didn't," said Associate Head Coach Gareth Webber. "At 8-8, mentally, Miranda wanted it more. Across the board, our players played with that same mental toughness."

In addition to Ranieri, Yale's freshmen came through with big wins as well. No. 2 Logan Greer defeated Ashley Clackson, 3-0 (9-0, 9-5, 9-3), and No. 3 Sarah Toomey came back to beat Tehani Guruge in an epic match, 3-2 (7-9, 6-9, 9-4, 9-1, 9-3).

Also picking up wins for Yale were No. 6 Jessica Balderston, who beat Emery Holton, 3-1 (9-5, 9-5, 8-10, 9-5), No. 8 Tara Wadhwa, who downed Kimbley Palterman, 3-0 (9-6, 9-0, 9-0), and No. 9 Elisabeth Hill, who defeated Julia Rosenthal, 3-0 (9-6, 9-5, 9-6).

"We were sharper, mentally and physically," said Webber. "We just wanted it more."

The Bulldogs will get a 10-day break before heading to Princeton to battle the Tigers next Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
