NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Yale women's squash team's quest for a fourth straight national title got off to a somewhat inauspicious start Saturday, as the Bulldogs dropped a close match to Penn, 5-4. Four of the top five seeds won for the Elis, but it wasn't enough to get past a much-improved Quaker squad.

No. 1 Catherine McLeod played an efficient match against Penn's Kristen Lange, defeating the freshman in four games. No. 2 Miranda Ranieri downed Sydney Scott, another freshman, 3-1, and Yale frosh Alia Aziz won in the No. 4 slot against Tara Chawla, 3-1. Captain Kate Rapisarda rounded out the Yale victories with a 3-0 win against Britt Hebden at No. 5.

With the overall match tied 4-4, the outcome came down to the No. 7 match between Sarah Barenbaum and Alisha Turner. A 3-1 win for Turner sealed the match for the Quakers, who picked up wins at Nos. 3, 6, 7, 8, and 9.

The Bulldogs are off until 2007, when they will take on Bates, Colby and Bowdoin in Brunswick, ME on January 6.
