Meneses Wins Again as Yale Drops Meet Against Harvard, Princeton
PRINCETON, N.J. – The Bulldogs put up a good fight against the reigning Ivy League Champions, but ultimately the Yale women's swimming and diving team came up short against Harvard and Princeton on Saturday. The final score was Harvard 209, Yale 89, while the the margin was closer against the Tigers with Princeton 197, Yale 103. These scores are a marked improvement over last year where the Bulldogs only put up 65 points against the Crimson and 69 points against the Tigers. Saturday was highlighted by a win from senior Alexandra Forrester in the 100-yard butterfly and a win from senior Paige Meneses in the one-meter diving event.
"We gained valuable experience over the last two days that we will use to our advantage at the Ivy Championship," said Robert J.H. Kiphuth Head Coach Jim Henry. "The team is on track to maximize our performances at the conference meet."
To kick things off for the day Forrester finished second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.26. The event was won by Harvard's Sara Li with a time of in 49.32. Captain Joan Weaver was next for the Bulldogs in eighth place with a time of 51.93.
In the 200-yard backstroke Cynthia Tsay finished ninth with a time of 2:05.02.
After posting the third-fastest time in the 1000-yard freestyle on Friday, Eva Fabian finished sixth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:54.92. While not her fastest 500 of the season, this time from Saturday is better than Fabian's winning 500 time against Dartmouth and Penn where Fabian led a 1-2-3 Yale sweep. Molly Albrecht came next on Saturday with a time of 4:58.70 for seventh place. Yale's next finisher was Weaver, who finished ninth with a time 5:00.48.
In the team's only swimming win of the weekend Forrester finished first in the 100-yard butterfly. She clocked in at 53.57, and was the only swimmer to come in under 54 seconds. The next two Bulldogs to come in were Kasey Mann in 11th place (58.41) and Angela Lee in 12th place (58.48).
Emma Smith then finished eighth in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:07.26. Tsay was right behind her in ninth with a time of 2:07.66.
The last swimming event of the weekend was the 400-yard freestyle relay, where Yale's A and B relays finished third and fourth. The 'A' flight of Gabrielle Bunney, Michelle Huang, Allison West and Lee was third with a time of 3:32.45, while the 'B' team of Emily Gudbranson, Callie Fosburgh, Albrecht and Cassidy Lapp finished fourth with a time of 3:39.08. Harvard's relays counted as exhibition as the Crimson had already clenched the win.
Following up her won in the three-meter diving event on Friday, Meneses finished first on one meter on Saturday with a score of 258.40. Meneses just pulled out the win, finishing ahead of Harvard's Emily Bonfig who posted a score of 258.00. The Bulldogs put two more divers in the top 10, with Olivia Grinker in seventh (229.65) and Kelly Sherman in eighth (226.55).
Up next for the Bulldogs is a dual meet against Brown on Feb. 9 at home in Kiphuth Pool.
