NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale women's swimming and diving team won its first home meet of the season today, prevailing 181-116 against Cornell. It was a dominant performance for the Bulldogs, who won 11 of 16 events. Yale improves to 1-1 in Ivy League dual meets with the win, and remains unbeaten at home since the 2010-11 season.
Competition began with the diving events. Lilybet MacRae has started her freshman season in impressive fashion, and today was no different. She finished second in the 3-meter diving event, with a score of 280.43. She was followed by Olivia Loucks in third with 269.70 points and Kelly Sherman in fourth with 268.35. MacRae finished first in the 1-meter diving event with a score of 286.27. Sherman was in third with a 259.41 and Loucks was fourth with 250.27.
The Bulldogs hit their stride in the next event, the 1000-yard freestyle, going 1-2-3. Eva Fabian finished comfortably in first in a time of 9:59.20, followed by Isla Hutchinson-Maddox in 10:18.05 and Casey Lincoln in 10:26.78.
The Bulldogs continued rolling in the 200-yard freestyle, as Wujciak finished first in 1:52.89, with Emma Smith coming in fourth in 1:55.79.
The wins kept coming, as Chintanaphol paced the 100-yard backstroke field in 57.98 seconds. Jameson was third in 1:00.33 and Lincoln came in fifth in 1:02.87. In the 100-yard breaststroke, Elizabeth Larsen was second in a time of 1:09.28. Stephens-Pickeral was fourth in 1:09.52, followed by Emily Gudbranson in 1:10.34.
Two Yale freshmen scorched the field in the 200-yard butterfly, as Sydney Hirschi finished first in 2:02.05, followed by Hutchinson-Maddox in 2:03.26.
Another freshman, Kina Zhou, dominated the sprint freestyle events today, finishing second in the 50-yard freestyle in 23.46 seconds and winning the 100-yard freestyle in 50.65 seconds. Wujciak was third in the 100-, finishing in 52.59.
Chintanaphol won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:04.30 and Courtney Randolph was second in 2:08.70.
Yale continued its dominance of the distance freestyle disciplines, as the Bulldogs went 1-2-3 in the 500-yard freestyle, with Fabian first in 4:55.02, Jameson second in 5:04.83 and Lincoln third in 5:10.96.
Hirschi won the 100-yard butterfly in 55.85 seconds. Zhou and Hutchinson-Maddox were third and fourth in 57.17 and 58.69 seconds, respectively. In the 200-yard individual medley, Smith was first in 2:07.73 and Chintanaphol was second in 2:09.39.
The final event of the day, the 400-yard freestyle relay, saw Yale's all-freshman "A" relay team of Hirschi, Jameson, Wujciak and Zhou finish first in 3:30.11. The "B" relay team of Fabian, Gudbranson, Jacqui Levere and Allison West was third in 3:40.04.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 11., when they host Dartmouth and Penn at the Kiphuth Pool. Competition begins at 10:00 a.m.
