Tory Nelson graduated from New Rochelle High School in New Rochelle, NY. She swims for her club team, the Badger Swim Club under head coach John Collins, and swam for her high school team under Kip Fierro, who also coaches Badger. Before coming to Yale, Tory was a junior national qualifier in the 100 breaststroke, but finds she has converted to distance free. Her sophomore year, she dropped 6 seconds in her 500 freestyle, breaking the 5 minute mark, and 5 seconds in her 1000, finishing 6th at Ivies. Nelson is an Environmental Studies major, and is considering a double major with African Studies. She notes that "Swahili is proving to be a bit of a challenge". In addition to her academic and swimming commitments, Tory is a member of a co-ed a cappella group at Yale: Mixed Company. Interestingly enough, her big sister and her 16-year-old brother were simultaneously recording CDs with their respective musical groups in the spring of 2005. Tory could not see herself spending her college years anywhere else. The friends she has met and the opportunities she has been given (both in and out of the pool), serve as mere reminders that "Yale is heaven on earth".
