Junior Caroline Stephenson was elected captain of the women's swimming and diving squad for the 2004-05 season. A graduate of Barnstable High School in Hyannis, MA, Caroline and her family reside in Cotuit, MA. As a swimmer, Caroline's diversity has been the distinguishing characteristic of her first three years at Yale. Recruited as a backstroker, Caroline performed in that event her freshman year. By her sophomore year, her scoring events at the Ivy Championships included both the 400 and 200 individual medleys, as well as backstroke. This past season Caroline finaled in both her IM events, and became a breaststroker as well. Her strong swim in her first collegiate 200 breaststroke was critical to the Bulldogs' win over Brown in the final dual meet of the season. At Ivies she finaled in that event, as well as holding down the breaststroke leg on the Yale school record-setting 400 medley relay.
After visiting 4 other Ivy schools during the early fall of her senior year of high school, Caroline chose to file an "early" application. She selected Yale because of its location, as well as for the balance it strikes between academics and athletics. Caroline's three-year record of improvement, most recently in her "new" major events (2:10.16 to 2:05.96 in the 200 IM; 4:31.51 to 4:23.44 in the 400 IM; 2:28.06 to 2:20.10 in the 200 Breast) to date has her teammates and the swimming staff looking forward to her senior year as captain.
