Bulldogs Crush Cornell and Navy

Ithaca, NY - The Cornell Big Red hosted Yale and Navy this weekend. The Elis had an extremely strong showing, totally dominating the competition in each event to win the meet. Yale triumphed over Cornell, 192 to 108, and also won big over Navy, with a final score of 208 to Navy's 92 points. Moira McCloskey '07 and Marilee Kiernan `09 led the Bulldogs, playing key roles in the winning medley relay team and also shining in their individual events.
Yale crushed the competition in the 200 medley relay, with the A team of McCloskey, Kiernan, Meg Gill '07 and Alexis Mann '09 taking first place with a time of 1:48.01. The Naval Academy A team snuck into second with a time of 1:49.80. Yale also claimed third and fourth place in the medley relay. The B team of Brenna Davis '09, Katie French `09, Liz Berger '07 and Chase Butler '07 swam to an outstanding third place in 1:52.81. The Eli's C team of Mairen Foley '09, captain Holly Mazar '06, Aidan McKinlay '09 and Katelyn Kane '08 clocked in at 1:52.97 for fourth place.
In the 1000 free, Laura Strittmatter '09 had an outstanding first place finish with a time of 10:31.16. Caroline Dowd '08 wasn't far behind, coming in second in 10:32.58. Sara Fracapane rounded out the Bulldog's stellar performance with a time of 10:46.9 for fourth place.
McCloskey swam her way to second place in the 100 back, with a time of 58.12. Teammates Davis and Megan Bailey '06 came in fourth and fifth place, with times of 1:00.37 and 1:02.14, respectively.
Although Kiernan missed out on first place in the 100 breast, the Elis completely swept second through fifth place in the event. Kiernan finished second with a time of 1:07.32. She was followed by captain Mazar, who swam the race in 1:09.81. French came in just behind Mazar, in 1:09.82 for fourth place. Kirsten Cartoski '07 capped off the sweep with a time of 1:10.21 for fifth place.
The Yale team once again showed their prowess in the 50 free, with Gill beating out Leah Tourtellotte of Cornell to claim first in 24.53. Mann was third in 24.73.
In the 100 free, Mann and Gill claimed second and third place for the Elis. Mann was second with a time of 53.48. Gill was close behind with a time of 53.53 for third place. Butler rounded out the group with a time of 54.40 for fifth place.
McCloskey crushed the competition in the 200 back, coming in first in 2:05.56. Davis was second with 2:07.16, and Megan Bailey '06 was fourth in 2:11.10.
In the 200 breast, Kiernan was second in 2:26.44. Kirsten Cartoski '07 came in third in 2:29.65. Mazar claimed fourth place with a time of 2:29.76.
Dowd was second in the 500 free, clocking in at 5:09.64. Strittmatter was second in 5:10.39. Tory Nelson '07 was fifth with a time of 5:13.31.
Gill came in first in the 100 fly, creaming the competition with a time of 57.70. Aidan McKinlay '09 was third in 59.74 and Berger was fifth in 1:00.27.
The Bulldogs swept the 200 IM. Bailey was first in 2:09.69, McCloskey came in second in 2:12.09 and Davis rounded out the top three in 2:13.58.
In the 400 free relay, the Yale A team of Mazar, Butler, Nicole Swaney '08 and Mann was second after Cornell with a time of 3:37.97.
In the 1 meter dive, Ali Jones '08 was second with a score of 235.95. Cameron Murphy '09 was fourth, scoring 216.95 points. In the 3 meter dive, Jones was third with a score of 247.50.
The Bulldogs will host Fairfield at home in New Haven on Friday, Jan. 20.
