Kim and Hyde Earn First-Team All-Ivy

March 8, 2009

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Six members of the Yale women's swimming and diving team have been honored with All-Ivy status. Junior Susan Kim and freshman Hayes Hyde each earned all-Ivy status twice. Kim made the first-team in both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke and Hyde made the first-team for the 200-yard butterfly and the second-team for 200-yard individual medley. The 200-yard freestyle relay also earned second-team all-Ivy honors. That team was comprised of junior Andrea Clifford, senior Alexis Mann, freshman Erica Kao and sophomore Ileana Lucos.

Kim had one of the best Ivy League Championships of any women's swimmer in recent memory. She swam in five A finals for the Bulldogs: three individual events and two relays. She won two of her individual events, the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke, and also set the Yale, meet, and Ivy League records in both of those events. Her times were 1:02.05 in the 100-yard breaststroke and 2:12.86 in the 200-yard event, both were personal bests and earned her first-team all-Ivy twice. She also took fifth place in the 200-yard individual medley, and helped Yale to fourth-place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard medley relay.

Hyde established herself as one of the best freshmen in the Ivy League with her extraordinary Ivy League Championship performance. Hyde swam in an impressive seven A finals: three individual and four relays and finished in the top-three in all her individual events. Hyde won the 200-yard butterfly on a crucial day-three at the Ivy League Championships. Her win, along with senior captain Aidan McKinlay and Lucos's fourth- and sixth-place finishes, was the turning point in the meet that allowed Yale to clinch third-place overall. Hyde also took second in the 200-yard individual medley, earning her a spot on the second-team all-Ivy for that event, and a place in Yale's record books with her time of 2:00.97. Hyde took third in her other individual event, the 100-yard butterfly and then helped Yale to top-four finishes in the 800-yard freestyle relay, the 400-yard medley relay, the 400-yard freestyle relay, and the 200-yard medley relay.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Clifford, Mann, Kao, and Lucos took second in the most controversial race of the meet. The event saw five of the eight schools disqualified, which left Harvard and Yale standing at the top. Yale took second with a time of 1:34.44. Clifford, Mann, Kao, and Lucos all had very successful meets in their own right, swimming in numerous A finals and picking up significant points for the Bulldogs throughout the meet.
