Season Opener Set For Friday
Nov. 10, 2004
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - With a strong mix of returning talent and new freshmen, Yale opens its 2004-2005 season with a home meet on Friday against Ivy League foe Columbia at 6 p.m. at Kiphuth Pool. Last year, Columbia upset the Bulldogs in New York, but Yale rebounded to finish ahead of the Lions at the Ivy League Championships.
Senior Captain Caroline Stephenson (Cotuit, MA), the top returning individual medley performer from 2003-2004, will lead a group of upperclassmen that include senior Rebecca Knicely (Williamsburg, Va) in the butterfly events, junior Holly Mazar (Whitby, Ontario) and sophomore Kirsten Cartoski (Jonesboro, GA) in the breaststroke, junior Megan Bailey (Reno, NV) and sophomore Moira McCloskey (Ventnor, NJ) in the backstroke and individual medley events. In the freestyle events, senior Allison Rogers (Pearl River, NY) and sophomore Cristina Hession (Little Silver, NJ) hold down the longer distances for the Bulldogs, while sophomores Chase Butler (Duxbury, MA) and Meg Gill (Chester, VA) will contribute their talents in the shorter events.
A mix of one senior, Melanie Loftus (McLean, VA), sophomore Liz Foglesong(Scottsdale, AZ), and three freshmen, Alexandra Jones (New York, NY), Rachel Litt (Chevy Chase, MD), Nicole Thain ( Rye, NY) will comprise the diving squad for Coach Ryan Moehnke's, who is in his second season. As was the case last season, the diving events and points should continue to remain critical to the team's success.
A strong group of freshmen swimmers will also see their first official action. Leading the way will be four of the top 10 scorers at the preseason Bulldog Cup team qualifier competition. They are Laura Aronson (Shelburne, VT), Caroline Dowd (Weston, MA), Katelyn Kane (Basking Ridge, NJ) and Nicole Swaney (Phoenix, AZ). The freshmen are looking forward to aiding the team's efforts to reverse the results of last year's dual meet.
