The Bulldogs will compete at the USTA Invitational this weekend in Flushing Meadows, NY.
Yale will send its entire squad to this annual tournament. Last season, the Bulldogs had a successful run in the tournament winning 23 of 24 matches on the first day and finishing the tournament by winning three singles flights.
The USTA Invitational will be Yale’s third tournament of the fall and the last fall tournament away from the friendly confines of the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center.
Head coach Danielle Lund McNamara said this weekend will be a good test for Yale to see where they stand against tough competition.
“This weekend should be some great competition and will give us a very good idea of how we're improving and the areas we need to work on,” McNamara said. “We've been focusing a lot in practice on our doubles and I'm anxious to see how it translates into our match play.”
After the completion of this tournament, the Bulldogs will be off next weekend before hosting the ITA East Regionals between Oct. 23 and Oct. 27. This weekend’s tournament will be important for the ITA East Regionals, McNamara said.
“This is our last event before Regionals, which we're aiming to peak for,” McNamara said. “The players understand the importance of this tournament in the selection and seeding for Regionals and I expect them to be very focused and prepared to play well.”
Yale will follow up the ITA East Regionals by hosting the ITA National Indoors, one of the three most prestigious individual collegiate tennis tournaments.
By hosting the ITA National Indoors, Yale will receive two automatic singles bids and one automatic doubles bid. The ITA National Indoors will consist of the 32 best singles players and 16 best Doubles Teams in the country. It will occur at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center between Nov. 5 and 8.
